What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is an excellent alternative for patients who want to rejuvenate their skin without the downtime typically associated with more invasive laser procedures. This nonsurgical aesthetic procedure helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but also has a positive effect on uneven skin tone and acne scars, improving the skin’s overall appearance, giving you fresher, younger looking skin. At Beauty Within Medical Aesthetics we exclusively use the Eclipse MicroPen™ [ which is approved and licensed by Health Canada]

What is microneedling used for?

Microneedling causes micro-punctures in your skin, which leads to an increase in collagen production at the affected area. More collagen means the skin thickens and becomes smoother, softer, and more toned over time and can lessen the appearance of facial imperfections, including:

  • Scars (including acne and burn scars)
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Large pores
  • Age spots (sun spots)
  • Uneven skin tones

The procedure tricks your skin into thinking it’s been wounded, so it heals and produces a smoother texture over several weeks.

What to expect during treatment

Most do manage a microneedling session quite well, however you may feel little or no discomfort at all during the procedure. At Synergy Centre Beauty Within, we apply numbing cream 30-45 minutes before your microneedling treatment — so you might feel light pressure to the treated area however you shouldn’t feel any pain.

What to expect after Microneedling

Following the procedure, the skin could be red and flushed [ similar to a sunburn] . You may also experience skin tightness and sensitivity to touch of the treated area. This will diminish and after 3-4 days, there is usually minimal evidence of post procedure irritation

To achieve optimal results, we may recommend more than one microneedling session, scheduled 4-6 weeks apart, however everyone’s needs are different.

Am I a good candidate for microneedling?

Microneedling is a valuable alternative to more invasive procedures such as laser skin resurfacing and deep chemical peels and becoming a favourite treatment option among many patients. As with any cosmetic procedures, there are risks involved with microneedling, but these are minimal.

Possible side effects are irritation and redness at the treated area.

Microneedling may not be a good fit if you:

  • Have eczema or psoriasis
  • Are pregnant
  • Had radiation therapy recently
  • Have open wounds
