PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Therapy for Hair Restoration

Why PRP Therapy for Hair Restoration?

At Beauty Within, we offer PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatment for hair restoration.

PRP is generally considered a safe and effective method of potentially reversing hair loss without surgery. PRP therapy can be used as a stand-alone treatment or in addition to other medical hair loss treatments to slow shedding, thicken hair strands, and improve hair quality.

While certain medical conditions, medications, and infections can cause hair loss and baldness, hair loss is most often genetic. Men commonly lose their hair in a distinct pattern (male pattern baldness) while women are more likely to lose hair evenly throughout their scalp. Both men and women may benefit from this treatment.

Health Canada approved, this treatment is provided only by trained and experienced health professionals.

What Does PRP Therapy Address?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a high concentration of platelets in a small volume of plasma. A small amount of blood is drawn and then the platelets/plasma are isolated (by centrifugation - spun at high speed in a machine) from the other components of the blood. The PRP is then injected or micro-needled into the scalp.

PRP therapy can stimulate inactive hair follicles into an active growth phase in those who have thinning hair or androgenic alopecia.

Treatment with PRP should be initiated early in the hair thinning/loss process. PRP is not indicated for long-established hair loss.

PRP therapy has also been used for decades to accelerate the healing of injured ligaments, tendons, muscles and joints.

  • Increases blood supply to the follicle, increases shaft size (thickness), triggers and maintains the growth phase, controls hair growth cycle, decreases hair loss.
  • PRP can be combined with hair transplantations/medication therapy or can be used as a stand-alone treatment.
  • Non-surgical.
  • Minimal downtime (patients must adhere to Post Care Instructions for best results).
  • Since PRP therapy uses your own blood for hair restoration treatment, there is little risk of allergic reaction or hypersensitivity.
  • Can also be used for skin rejuvenation and other dermatological conditions.

  • A treatment series is a minimum of 4 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.
  • Maintenance treatment is recommended every 9 to 12 months.
  • Results may wear off if not maintained.
  • Most people will see noticeable hair regrowth within 3-4 months. Gradual improvement could continue for up to a year.
  • You may notice an initial increase in hair shedding as the PRP is helping move your hair follicles into the next stage of the hair growth cycle.
  • Results vary between individuals. Some people exceed our expectations and some people respond below expectations. Although good results are expected, with the focus on improvement and not perfection, every person is unique and it is impossible to guarantee results.

Who Should Not Receive PRP Therapy for Hair Restoration?

PRP is not recommended if you are breastfeeding, pregnant, have a blood condition especially involving platelets or fibrin, recent blood transfusion, if you have a history of keloid scarring, collagen vascular diseases such as scleroderma or if you have cancer. Avoid treatment in areas where there is skin cancer, precancerous skin lesions, skin infection/or chronic skin condition (eg. eczema, psoriasis) at the site of treatment. If you have hemophilia, infectious diseases or liver function issues, PRP may not be indicated. Bleeding disorders or blood thinners make you more prone to bruising. Smoking/second-hand smoke interferes with healing and may increase the risk of all side effects especially infection or produce poor quality PRP. Chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV or other immunosuppressive conditions or medications may increase your risk of infection and other side-effects. If you have any of the above issues there may be a decreased or lack of response to treatment.
