When it comes to total skin rejuvenation, two treatments immediately come to mind – Platelet Rich Plasma – or PRP – and micro needling. Often confused because they both involve needles, these two treatments can significantly restore, repair and revitalize tired and ageing skin.
So, what’s the difference? Which treatment should you choose? And what’s going to deliver the best result? Here’s everything you need to know:
While they both involve needles, PRP and micro-needling are two very different treatments. PRP is actually a form of cosmetic injectable. It involves drawing a small sample of your blood, which is then spun in a centrifuge for approximately five minutes to separate the plasma from the other blood particles.
The platelet rich plasma is then reinjected back into the treatment area to stimulate collagen and elastin production. The possibility of side effects is practically nonexistent because the body is unlikely to reject its own blood.
Micro needling meanwhile doesn’t involve injecting a product into your skin, rather it works by penetrating the top layers of your skin with micro-needles that create pinpoint injuries in the deeper layers. This then triggers the body’s natural healing response, stimulating new collagen and elastin formation.
At Beauty Within we offer The Eclipse MicroPen® - which is the most advanced medical-grade micro-needling treatment available today. The Eclipse MicroPen® is an automated micro-needling treatment which is applied in a vertical direction for better precision when treating the skin. Unlike automated Micro-needling the roller does not create a precise vertical action. The lack of precision can contribute to greater discomfort and inconsistent effects to the skin. Most Eclipse MicroPen® patients are red for 24 hours or less. That advantage means you can get the procedure performed on a Friday and be back to normal for work on Monday.
PRP and micro needling are both used to treat the face, neck, décolletage and hands. PRP specifically, is extremely effective for difficult to treat areas, such as the delicate under eye area where clients often notice signs of ageing first but where no laser can be used.
In terms of benefits, PRP and micro-needling deliver very similar results including:
That being said, each treatment has its strengths – PRP is particularly good for reducing wrinkles and fine lines, while micro needling is great for reducing active acne and acne scarring.
While some results may be almost immediate, your best results usually won't be visible until four to six weeks after the procedure.
The two treatments do vary in terms of length of results. Results from micro needling typically last one to three months, while results from PRP typically last 12 to 18 months.
Overall, both treatments are fantastic for total skin rejuvenation and pack an even more powerful punch when combined together. Still unsure which treatment is right for you?
