Migraine Treatment - Is Botox a Fit for You?

Chronic Migraine Headaches...New Treatment Alternatives

Almost everyone has experienced headaches in their lifetime, but for many people headaches go far beyond mere discomfort and annoyance; they can be debilitating and last for days. In extreme cases, when you're living with 15 or more headache days a month, and each headache lasting 4 hours or more, you feel a lot of your life is taken away from you. Add to that at least 8 bad headache days a month that have the character of a migraine, and you've got a tough situation.

Chronic migraines are frequent headaches, that usually affect one side of the head, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photo-phobia (increased sensitivity to light), and phonophobia (increased sensitivity to sound).

For some people, seasonal weather changes may cause imbalances in brain chemicals, including serotonin, which can prompt a migraine. Weather-related triggers also may worsen a headache caused by other triggers.

Migraines which are triggered by weather can understandably be very frustrating. After all, we cannot control the weather. Although making healthy lifestyle choices — eat healthy foods, exercise regularly, drink enough water, get enough sleep and keep your stress under control - can help reduce the number and severity of your migraines, for so many unfortunately it is not enough.

Treatment for migraines commonly starts with pain relievers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen, anti-nausea medications, and the avoidance of triggers. Stronger pain killers such as triptans (e.g. Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig) or ergots (usually a combination of Ergotamine and caffeine), may be used if needed. Anticonvulsants , antihypertensives or betablockers have been used to prevent chronic migraines.

BOTOX® has been used for cosmetic purposes and medical purposes for many years, and has been approved and scientifically tested for treatment for chronic migraines. After having BOTOX® [cosmetic] treatments, patients with chronic migraine headaches began to notice that their headaches were frequent, less intensive and they have had a significant improvement with their “quality of life” in this treatment approach.
